Le antiche Porte della città di Palermo  The ancient Doors of the city of Palermo

L'antica Città di Palermo era circondata da forti ed alti bastioni, si usciva e si entrava da essa tramite le sue Porte che si aprivano nei bastioni, oggi in parte diroccati e di cui esistono benchè poche rovine; mentre delle Porte ci rimangono solo i nomi, tranne qualcuna che ancora rimane in piedi, sfidando il tempo e l'incuria degli uomini.

The ancient City of Palermo was surrounded by strong and tall bastions, people got out and entered from the Doors that opened on the bastions, today partly demolished and of which there exist just few ruins; while of the Doors we only know the names, except some that still remain standing, challenging the time and the carelessness of men.

Porta di Carini	Nel 1300 esisteva, nello stesso luogo, un'altra porta, di cui non si conosce il nome, allora in riva al mare, nel 1782 fu demolita perché cadente. Al suo posto fu edificata la nuova che prese il nome di Porta di Carini, perché da essa  partiva la strada che conduceva alla vicina città di Carini. In 1300 there were, in the same place, another door which name was unknown, in front of the sea; in 1782 it was demolished as it was falling to pieces.A new one was built and took the name of Porta di Carini because from there the road to the closer city of Carini began.
Porta Nuova	Inserita a fianco del Palazzo Reale. Esisteva già un'antica porta fin dal 1460 che si chiamava Porta dell'Aquila, poi nel 1570 essa fu demolita per sostituirla con quella ancora esistente, che venne chiamata Porta Nuova . Da essa entrò nella città  Carlo V° di ritorno dalla battaglia di Tunisi. Beside the Palazzo Reale. There was before an ancient door since 1460, called Porta dell'Aquila, then in 1570 it was demolished to be sobstitute with the actual new one which was called Porta Nuova. From it Carlo V° returning from the battle of Tunisi
Porta Ossuna	Fu costruita nel 1613 dal vicerè Don Pietro Duca d'Ossuna, dal quale prese il nome. Sostituì la vecchia Porta chiamata Porta Rota. It was built in 1613 by the vicerè Don Pietro Duca d'Ossuna and the door took his name.It substituted the old Door named Porta Rota.
Porta di Castro	Fu innalzata nel 1620, verso la fine dell'attuale Corso Tuckery, prese il nome dal vicerè Don Francesco Conte di Castro. It was built in 1620, near the end of the actual Corso Tuckery, it took its name rom the vicerè Don Francesco Conte di Castro
Porta S. Agata	Si trova nel Corso Tuckery, fu edificata nel 1275 e porta il nome della vicina chiesa  di S. Agata. It is found in Corso Tuckery, it was built in1275 and has the name of the nearer Church of S.Agata
Porta Montalto	Sostitui Porta di Mazzara nel 1537 sotto il vicerè Don Luigi Moncada, Duca di Montalto, da cui prese il nuovo nome. It substituted Porta di Mazzara in 1537 under the vicerè Don Luigi Moncada, Duca di Montalto, from who took its name.
Porta Termini	Questa porta si trovava a metà strada dell'attuale via Lincoln, fu edificata verso il 1171 e venna chiamata "Termini" perché da essa partiva la strada per la città di Termini Imerese.  Quando Garibaldi il 27 maggio 1860 vi passò con le sue truppe, per entrare a Palermo, fu chiamata anche Porta Garibaldi This door was founded half way from the actual Via Lincoln, it was built about 1171 and was called "Termini" because rom it the road to Termini Imerese started. When Garibaldi, the day o 27 July 1860, passed with his troops through it to enter Palermo, it was also called Porta Garibaldi
Porta Reale	Si trovava nelle vicinanze dell'attuale via Lincoln, fu costruita nel 1784, sostituendo la precedente chiamata Porta della Vittoria, (dall'arabo bàb al futùb). Prese il nome di Reale, in onore a Maria Carolina d'Austria, moglie di Ferdinando I di Borbone. Near the actual Via Lincoln, It was built in 1784, instead of the old one, Porta della Vittoria, (from the Arab bàb al fatùb), It took the name of  Reale, in honour to Maria Carolina of Osterreich, wife o Ferdinando I di Borbone
Porta dei Greci	Era situata lungo la Marina, inserita sotto il palazzo del Marchese Forcella. Nello stesso luogo esisteva già dal 1300 un'altra porta che venne abbattuta perchè troppo piccola, per sostituirla  nel 1553 con quella detta " dei Greci", dal luogo dove abitava una colonia di Greci. It was placed near the Marina, put under the Palace of the Marchese Forcella. In the same place there existed already since 1300 another Door that was destroyed as it was too small; it was substitued with the one called dei Greci, as a Greek's people Colony was there
Porta Macqueda	Fu edificata nel 1780 dal vicerè Marcantonio Colonna, Principe di Stigliano, di fronte a quella di Vicari. Già nel 1600 esisteva nello stesso posto. It was built in 1780 by the vicerè Marcantonio Colonna, Prince of Stigliano, in ront of the Door of the Vicari. It was there since 1600
Porta di Vicari	Era situata dalla parte opposta a Porta Macqueda. Chiamata anche Porta Sant'Antonino. It was in front of Porta Macqueda. It was also called Porta Sant'Antonino
Porta della Pescheria	Alla Cala, costruita intorno al secolo XIV, chiamata anche Porta della Calce. Near the Cala, built around  century XIV, called also Porta della Calce.
Porta della Cala	Adiacente all'antico porto della citta', chiamata anche Porta di S. Cristina. Distrutta per far posto alla VICARIA Near the ancient port of the Town, also called Door of S.Cristina. Destroyed in order to make place to the VICARIA
Porta di Piedigrotta	Alla Cala (all'antico porto della citta'), prendeva il nome della vicina Chiesa di Santa Maria di Piedigrotta. At the Cala (near  the ancient port of the city), it took the name of the near Church of Saint Maria di Piedigrotta,
Porta Felice	E' sulla Marina e fu eretta da nel 1582, dal vicerè Marcantonio Colonna. Venne chiamata " Felice " dal nome di Donna Felice Orsini, moglie del vicerè. It stays on the Bay and was erected in 1582, from vicerè Marcantonio Colonna. It was called " Felice " from the name of Donna Felice Orsini, wife of the vicerè
Porta di S. Giorgio	Era situata nelle vicinanze dell'attuale via Cavour, ed era stata eretta nel 1194 da Federico III. It wassituated in the vicinanze of the current one via Cavour, and had beenerected in the 1194 from Federico III.
Porta Carbone	Non si conosce il periodo della sua costruzione, si conosce il periodo della sua ultima restaurazione, nel 1778. Veniva chiamata anche Porta dei Legni The period of its construction is not known, knows the period of itslast restoration, in 1778. Porta dei Legni came call also.
Porta Dogana	Fu edificata nel 1520, e abbattuta verso il 1600. It was built up in the 1520, and pulled down towards the 1600.
Porta del Molo	Veniva chiamata anche Porta dei Frumenti. This door was also called Porta dei Frumenti

Altre Porte esistevano all'interno della citta' vecchia fino alla fine del 1200, lungo le cinta delle mura Puniche. Esse esistevano prima dell'epoca arabo-normanna. I loro nomi erano i seguenti: 1 Porta dell'Aquila 2 Porta Busuemi 3 Porta Giudaica 4 Porta dei Trabocchetti 5 Porta dei Patitelli 6 Porta Oscura 7Porta degli Schiavi 8 Porta S. Agata alla Guilla 9 Porta Rota

Particolare dell'entrata della Porta ai lati sono scolpiti delle figure di Mori a braccia conserte o spezzate in segno di sottomissione ai siciliani.
