One of the more picturesque and characteristics monuments of Palermo by the Norman's, made erect from Ruggero II in the 1132. Before entering directly in the church must be crossed the small but parish priest garden, that contributes to accompany the visitor in an atmosphere "magic", completely extraneous to all what of "real" surround the building. It is simple and square has accompanied from a bell tower to mono fore with five small domes coloured of red that they overhang building sober and compact architecture, the everything has an oriental appearance.
In the inside there is not decorations but only a suggestive interlacement of shades and created lights from the link between the domes and the perimetrical walls that happens degrading and niches by means of small angular bows. Gotten out of the church, the attractive small cloister is entered, of the '200, on combined columns.

La Cappella Palatina
Palazzo Reale

Ruggero II was a powerful Viking, with exceptional political ability and a fervent imagination. At the the beginning of his kingdom were present in the island and in Palermo ethnic and religious differences, that were from him maintained for aware political reasons. Palatina Chapel, in the Real Palace, reassumes in the architectural forms and in the decoration  these different tendencies.
The plant synthesis between a Byzantine tendency (central) and a Latin (longitudinal).  Then the Arabic component, in the famous ceiling in fully grown wood from from thousand small holes carved in the year 1131 from Oriental: in practice the most ancient example of muqarnas, a myriad of holes that they relieve the niches digs in the ceiling, and decorated with paintings in which the human figure melt to the symbolic one of animal varieties and of abstract motives.
Also the iconography of the mosaics follows a precise program, despite that the general integrity has stayed compromised from the depths restaurations and from the remaking.
An other example of the union of different rites has given from the representation of two Christ, that in the dome blesses holding the fingers in low according to the Greek simbologhy the Christ Pentocratore of the apse has the turned fingers toward the top according to the Latin ritual.
Certainly it is that the wanted magnificence from Ruggero II has stayed intact.
The backdrop against which must stand out the figure of the king has constituted from precious marbles, and, above the zone of the throne, the figure of the Christ appears. The simbologhy was immediate: Ruggero II was the divine interpreter and the consecrated.

" EL AZIZ ", in Arab, means noble, splendid, and certain as the imposing must appear building of the Zisa. We arrives through the way of the Norman's and the show is one of most exciting that the city offers. The Zisa was initiated from Guglielmo I il Malo, the child of the big Ruggero II the founder of the Norman's dynasty in Sicily. Guglielmo II  wanted to build a building that is the same time a place of delights and the expression of the power of the King for his rests. A certain assignment not easy for the architects that were about to the enterprise.
Ample spaces were used to the harem of the sovereign and the extraordinary unity of the composition, gotten with an architectural rigor not common, the proof of as the will of had respected William. The inhabited building with continuity up to the post-war period, has had transformations and damages.  In the 1951, freed they completely began the restaurations that have gone in front of alternate phases up to little time back.
The building is however visible and appears now in all his magnificence. Certainly excluding from the urban context needs in which it is: the magnificent Genoard (The Heaven on the earth) it is time populated from buildings taller than the palace.

Fontana Pretoria

The aboriginal destination of the Pretoria Fountain was for the Florentine villa of Don Luigi of Toledo, but in the 1573 the child preferred sell it to the Palermitans' senate that acquired it for well 30 thousand shields.
The year after the 644 marmoreal pieces arrived at to Palermo, and they had systematized from the child of FrancescoCamilliani, author of the fountain, in the near plaza to the Senatorial Palace. (Today Palazzo del Municipio also called Palazzo delle Aquile, built in 1463 and restructured in 1875).
Beyond to the artistic value, the fountain-monument contains a symbolical meaning. It is in the centre of Palermo, to the same distance from the Felice Door and from the New Door, as like from the two castles.
This position introduced a simbologhy that would have had an influence in the two following centuries.
The fountain, in fact, had the double function of being like sacred object of Palermo and like central point of the "urban cosmology" it prefigured, in fact, the model of the central Octagon that would have stayed then realized in the Four Songs, built little far from the plaza.
The four roads have represented from the four stairways to cross that is inserted in the circular scheme of the fountain, and, along the diagonals, the four more meaningful rivers for the history of  Palermo.
They melt different cosmological connected simbologhy with the time so, through the 12 oval tubs and the 24 heads of animals, and with the space since the fountain could be uniform in 8 or 16 sectors of the circle. The 8 fundamental managers that are created individualize the cardinal points therefore, and the cross of roads determines the 4 districts.

I Quattro Canti

perchè sei opportunamente suddivisa in molte vie,

The most notable realizations of the Palermitan's baroque  belongs more to the urbanism than to the architecture.
At the beginnings of the Six hundred Century city's order suffered the radical transformations: it was prolonged the axle of the ancient Càssaro
( El Kasr = The Castle)
today known as Vittorio Emanuele Course and comes traced the by Macqueda, (from the name of the Prince Don Bernardino de Cardenas Duca di Macqueda), then it was call for a short time Toledo Street from the name of Prince Don Garcia di Toledo.  The historical centre comes much soldier that mirrored the demands of dominion as reduced to a spatial system and of control of the Spanish Prince. The meeting to "cross" of the two roads comes underlined from the construction of Vigliena Plaza (dedicated to Prince Don Francisco Fernandez Pacheco Marchese di Vigliena), said commonly of the Four Songs, (1608) that engages a grandiose and theatrical appearance. The quattro cantoni, ( elegant baroque's architectonic prospect - 1609/1620) are made up from the four orders: the fountains which represent the rivers that bathed  the city in the ancient times (Oreto - Kemonia - Pannaria -Papireto), in the inferior order there are 4 statues that represent the seasons, in the median one 4 statues of the Spanish Princes (Carlo V- and of the Filippo II- III- IV) and in the superior one the 4 Palermo's holy (Cristina- Oliva- Agata- Ninfa), each protectress of the district that has to the shoulders.
Also here, like in the Pretoria Fountain could take place a double reading: celebrative - symbolic and spatial.
The four Songs represent the centre and the spatial synthesis in fact, "the eye" of the city from which is possible to see the more important parts.

The awareness of the exceptionally of the enterprise comes out from the operetta of Battista Maringo, writing to the epoch of the construction and all dedicated to the interpretation of the plaza:

You can't Palermo, have contained in a more
noble Palermo,
because six divided in many streets,
and niceness you that are an only city,
you will understand four city.
Better than you,
you are you made generating of you.

It is a grandiose complex, vivacious for the gilded colour of the hanging and  for the animated meet of varied styluses. Erect in the 1185, had rehandled in the XIV-XVI Centuries and above all in the 1781 and 1801, when Ferdinando Fuga added the discordant dome and transformed the intern. The façade of the XIV-XV Century, between two towers, is animate from bows tendencies and it has a grandiose Gothic portal 1426; two great bows connect to the magnificent bell tower that stays in front of. On the plaza, to the beginning to left of the church, it opens a big portico, erect in the second half of the '400, to three arcades  and with pediment carved to arabesque minutes, that  precedes a rich Gothic portal (usual entry) of the 1426, surmounted from a mosaic (Madonna) of the end of the '200.
The interns is the famous graves imperial and real, stately and simple urns the graves of Enrico IV - Federico II - the empress Constanza - Ruggero II.
In Chapel, the famous silvery urn 1631 that contains the relics of S. Rosalia, Patron Saint of the city. Going on to right from Chapel of S. Rosalia, the treasure could be visited that picks up goldies enamels, codes hand-worked and sacred hangings; particularly  the tiara of gold of Constanza of Aragona, wife of  Federico II.

La Cattedrale
prima del cambiamento effettuato da Ferdinando Fuga - (1780)
before the changes made by Ferdinando Fuga  - (1780)

The Cathedral of Palermo has suffered additions and rehashes in many epoches, in '300, '400 and '500, but above all in 1781-1801 when with a plan of the florentine Ferdinando Fuga it was remake the intern and was addition the discordant dome.
That's how that period was described by Giuseppe Pitrè, in his very handsome book::
"The life of Palermo one hundred and more years ago.",  ....going on toward Porta Nuova cover yourself the eyes to see not the cathedral. From the 1780 the engineer Fuga perpetrates restaurations, that are complete transformations. There was beside the bell tower, from the oriental side, a tower, and he has converted it into a dome almost as that of S. Giuliano; there was, here on the Southern place, three orders of merli and windows, and he has loaded them of thirteen domes and little cupole for as many chapels he build them by destroying the walls sides along the two sides aisles, and necessary for the background to chapels earning place to midday and to north. The gaginesche statues of the choir were plant behind these domes  to side of the crownings of Vittorio Amedeo and of Charlo  III, under the portico!  There was... there was all a treasure of siculo-normanna art and he hasn't had reservedness of disfigure it, by losing the more beautiful parts. And for so much foolish, first not permission, then wanted from the Court of Naples, ten thosuand shileds has been spent, and likewise there will be another expense of so many shields for the internal decorations, in which not even an arc revering will be respected! And it is  already spoken about the work with immense advantage and it is to the thought that for the party of the Corpus Domini of the new century (4 June 1801) the rejuvenated remade temple will come reopened to the cult of the believers!.
