Sorge sul primo nucleo abitato, il casale arabo chiamato Chiudìa. Il paese attuale fu fondato nel 1629 dalla Famiglia del Principe Termini. Successivamente passò ai Principi di Castelvetrano e poi ancora al Duca di Monteleone.

La Festa patronale si svolge l'ultima domenica di Maggio (S. Croce), ed è seguita dalla tradizionale sagra detta "Tataratà":festa in costumi, cavalcate, rulli di tamburi e combattimenti che rievocano le antiche battaglie tra Normanni e Arabi.
